MITRE staff are tasked with applying their skills to impact programmatic and technical decisions of highest importance to the country. The MITRE Corporation’s Sensing, Exploitation, & Resilient Communications (SERC) Department supports both manned and unmanned aerial platforms used by the United States Military and international partners. We focus on creating and fielding adaptive communications, sensors, and networking infrastructure needed for successful execution of various mission areas. This involves modernizing fielded capabilities in the near/mid-terms and developing/fielding the next generation communications infrastructure in all phases of systems evolution. Our work spans the system development lifecycle, supporting concept exploration, experimentation, and development. The department’s primary focus areas are in RF communications, sensors, networking, modeling and simulation, system integration, systems engineering, and software programming.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will apply a knowledge of satellite communications to shape the architecture, specification, development, integration, and test strategies of next generation Military Satellite Communications systems across the Air Force Portfolio
  • You will perform system of systems trade space analysis for various satellite communications architectures to include traditional high capacity satellite systems, novel small-satellite systems, hybrid approaches, etc.
  • You will perform systems engineering analysis for requirement trades, design and integration trades, end-to-end performance analysis, and identifying risk mitigation approaches.
  • You will lead working groups or studies covering multiple engineering domains with a diverse team, creating timely and actionable recommendations to shape DoD strategy, and interfacing and collaborating across multiple stakeholders to create optimized solutions to national problems
  • You will lead concept development for satellite terminal solutions, leveraging modeling and simulation, hands on prototyping, integration, and testing activities


  • You have experience with satellite communication (SATCOM) system architectures and design
  • You have experience in systems engineering with expertise across the development lifecycle from concept development through requirements definition, system development and integration, and into verification
  • You are a strategic thinker and have strong interpersonal skills to effectively lead and collaborate across multiple organizations and engineering disciplines
  • You can lead multiple engineering disciplines to provide solutions to complex problems that require software, hardware, mechanical, and reliability approaches while balancing cost and schedule constraints
  • You have experience evaluating and testing complex systems
  • BS, MS, or PhD in engineering disciple with 10+ years relevant experience

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with one or more SATCOM systems to include: emerging commercial SATCOM, military satellite communications, and/or wideband SATCOM
  • Understanding of the current state of technology in areas such as: small-satellites, RF, antennas, DSP, networking, terminals, gateways, etc.
  • Ability to leverage modeling and simulation tools and/or analysis to evaluate systems and drive decisions
  • Familiarity with acquisition strategy, development, and platform integration of SATCOM systems
