Wastewater Operations Technician

City of Fresno

This is a Full-time position in Fresno, CA posted July 8, 2021.

SALARY: $4,547 – $5,525/mo.



Wastewater Mechanical Specialist is the journey level class in the Wastewater Mechanical series. Incumbents perform the more complex assignments in the repair, service, maintenance, fabrication, and installation of Wastewater Treatment Plant equipment and machinery; including but not limited to overhauling pumps, and gearboxes; and diagnosing hydraulic and pneumatic problems and making necessary repairs.

Vacancies currently exists in the Department of Public Utilities, Wastewater Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City’s discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that gained as a Wastewater Mechanical Technician in the City service; OR four (4) years performing mechanical maintenance in an industrial processing facility with emphasis on fluid pumping and mechanical drive systems.

A valid California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Mechanical Technologist Grade II certification is desirable.

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License at time of appointment.

The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.


The examination process may consist of the following:

Written Examination – 100 % The written examination is designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge in the following areas: knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the mechanical, electrical and welding trades; general construction maintenance and repair work practices and terminology; safety; maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; tool identification and interpersonal & public relations. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of March 8, 2021.


Candidates applying for veteran’s preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran’s preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
