The Manager, Airworthiness is an experienced leader within the aerospace or related industry and has the responsibility, accountability and authority (RAA) for overall airworthiness of the HAPS Business Unit The Manager, Airworthiness reports to the Vice President of HAPS and will act as an extension of Senior Leadership to build a diverse and engaged team (i.e., people management and career growth) for execution of strategic and tactical capabilities for certification, reliability and safety processes and tools.

Position Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of certification, reliability and safety engineers including budget planning, staffing, training, performance evaluations and career development
  • Manage the airworthiness requirements, design and development of new Unmanned Aircraft System products as well as product changes and enhancements
  • Act as the point of contact with the FAA and/or other country regulatory agencies for establishing certification plans.
  • Lead skilled resources to effectively execute on business objectives, contract and plans to meet programmatic and business goals
  • Ensure the HAPS Business Unit has effective airworthiness policy and procedures to comply with all internal and external Quality Management System and Industry Standards (i.e., internal command media, AS9100:D, ISO, etc.)
  • Act as customer point of contact for the Business Unit’s airworthiness technical discussions
  • Perform detailed airworthiness briefings to HAPS VP, AeroVironment management and customers executives;
  • Assists with system design reviews as well as support input to test plans and procedures, supports program-specific system safety working groups
  • Acts as an advisor to the team to meet schedules and/or resolve technical issues. Provides mentorship and leadership to airworthiness engineers. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function
  • Other duties as assigned

Special Requirement
U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) or asylee/refugee status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 8+ years of related functional experience (i.e., reliability, certification or safety engineering)
  • 3+ years of managing a functional engineering team
  • 3+ years of FAA certification experience (i.e., unmanned or manned aircraft)
  • Significant experience in certifying other components with the FAA or other airworthiness organization
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of appropriate design, analysis and simulation tools and validation techniques; effectively articulates advanced concepts and ideas to both technical and non-technical staff
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), MS Project and Adobe Acrobat)
  • Ability to travel domestic and internationally (up to 20%)

Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Advanced degree is preferred (Aerospace, Mechanical or Structural Engineering preferred)
  • Relevant experience with unmanned air vehicles/unmanned air systems is preferred
  • Reliability, system safety, or flight test experience background is a plus
  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving, time management, interpersonal and communication skills
